Blessing of the Easter Foods
Saturday, April 4th
11:00AM in the church.
The custom of blessing food for Easter arose from the discipline of fasting throughout Lent and the special Easter fast during the Easter Triduum. Easter was the first
day when meat, eggs, and other foods could be eaten. Although not of obligation, the special fast during the Triduum may still be observed as well as the tradition of blessing food for the first meal
of Easter. According to custom, food may be blessed before the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday, as is practiced in our parish.
Participants arrange their Easter foods in a basket or other container and bring the container to the church to be blessed. Food items can include: meat, bread, cheese, wine, herbs, vegetables, eggs,
chocolates, and more. Baskets/containers should be place on the bottom steps of the altar, and participants should be seated in the pews.
Blessings can also take place in the home, performed by the laity - a copy of the blessing is available below.
