Becoming Catholic (OCIA)
Welcome! We’re excited you’re interested in learning more about the Catholic Church and potentially becoming Catholic! Becoming part of the Catholic Church starts with
deepening your understanding of the Christian faith through a formation process. This process is called The Order of Christian Initiation for Adults (OCIA / formerly known as RCIA).
What is the OCIA?
The Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA) is a gradual process of conversion and initiation into the Catholic Christian community providing individuals the space to encounter God and respond
to His invitation to a new way of life in the Catholic faith. It is a process of conversion through which a faith community journeys with individuals as we all desire to grow closer to God. OCIA is a
process, not a program. It is grounded in a respect for the personal faith journey of each individual.
Who is the OCIA for?
1. Persons who have never been baptized and wish to receive the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist (Holy Communion) in the Catholic Church.
2. Persons who were baptized in another Christian denomination and wish to be received into full communion with the Catholic Church by receiving the sacraments of
Confirmation and Eucharist.
3. Baptized Catholics who have not completed their initiation; by receiving the sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist.
4. Confirmed Catholics who desire to grow in their faith and deepen their relationship with Jesus Christ.
How does the OCIA work?
In OCIA, individuals reflect and learn about what is means to be Catholic - who we are, what we believe, how we celebrate and pray, how we relate with one another and with God. Beginning in the fall,
we meet on most Wednesdays (excluding holidays) for one hour at 7:00 PM. There is a
curriculum developed that introduces participants to the foundational beliefs of the Catholic Church. Here you will find an open space to ask questions about what Catholics believe while meeting with
others striving to follow Christ and live Gospel values. Know that initial inquiry does not commit you to proceed with joining the Church.
